“Back taxes” can mean two
different problems.
Knowing which one you have helps us direct you toward the right services.
“I haven't filed my taxes.”
You may need one or more overdue federal or Maryland returns prepared and filed. This is the core focus of our prior-year tax preparation service.
Examples: missed 2023 filing, multiple unfiled years, missing W-2s or 1099s.“I filed, but I still owe.”
Filed returns with unpaid balances involve a different tax issue. We can review the circumstances and discuss whether additional compliance or representation assistance is appropriate.
Examples: IRS balance-due notices, payment concerns, collection correspondence.Questions people ask before they call.
Being behind doesn't mean you need to have all the answers. Start with the questions that matter most.
Ask us directlyCan I file tax returns from several years ago?
Generally, yes. Older returns can often still be prepared and filed, though filing options and refund eligibility vary by year. We'll help identify which years need attention.
What if I can't find my old W-2s or 1099s?
Start with what you have. Depending on the year and circumstances, employer records, IRS wage and income transcripts, or other documentation may help. Some transcripts are incomplete and additional records may still be needed.
Should I file if I can't afford the tax bill?
In general, don't automatically delay a required return just because you can't pay the full tax balance. Filing and payment are separate issues; options for paying what you owe can be reviewed.
Can you help me with an IRS notice?
We can review correspondence about unfiled returns and assist with applicable tax preparation. If you need representation or a separate resolution service, we can discuss that scope individually.
Will a lender or agency accept my prepared tax return?
Requirements vary. Some organizations ask for filed returns, IRS transcripts, or proof of acceptance rather than an unsigned or unfiled copy. Always check the requesting organization's specific requirements and deadlines.
Can you e-file all my old tax returns?
Not necessarily. Electronic filing is generally limited to certain recent tax years. Older returns may require paper filing or another method, depending on the year and applicable procedures.
Your next opportunity shouldn't have to wait on old paperwork.
Whether it's a mortgage, a business decision, an IRS letter, or peace of mind, start with a conversation about your missing returns.
